MONTEZUMA, Ind. — A new chapter begins for the Montezuma community on Tuesday, August 4, as Montezuma Elementary – an Indiana Agriculture & Technology School (IATS) celebrates its opening with a public ribbon cutting ceremony at 5:30 p.m.

The celebration marks the culmination of months of community collaboration to preserve the neighborhood school after the closure of the former Montezuma Elementary School. What began as a grassroots effort by local residents has grown into a thriving tuition-free public charter school serving students in Pre-K through Grade 6, whose first day of school is Wednesday, August 5.
“This day represents far more than the kickoff of a new school year,” said Keith Marsh, Executive Director of Indiana Agriculture & Technology School. “It represents a community that refused to give up on its children. From the beginning, this has been a community-driven effort, and we’re honored to celebrate alongside the families, volunteers, educators, and local leaders who helped make this day possible.”
Leading the school is Janine Sutton, who brings more than 24 years of elementary education experience, including two decades serving Montezuma students and families.
“I believe that a successful school is built on strong relationships among students, parents, staff, and the community,” Sutton said. “Our team has spent the summer preparing classrooms, building relationships, and creating an environment where every child feels valued, challenged, and excited to learn. We can’t wait to welcome our students through the doors.”

A Community That Made This Possible
Montezuma Elementary’s opening is the direct result of a remarkable community effort.
Following the announcement that the previous elementary school would close, local residents came together to explore ways to preserve educational opportunities for future generations. That volunteer organizing committee worked alongside Indiana Agriculture & Technology School and ultimately became the school’s Montezuma Elementary Local Advisory Board, continuing to serve as ambassadors and advisors for the school.
The inaugural Local Advisory Board includes:

- Pam Padan (Secretary)
Nathan Falls also serves on the Indiana Agriculture & Technology School Board of Directors, creating an important connection between local leadership and the school’s governing board.
“The Local Advisory Board ensures that Montezuma families continue to have a voice as the school grows,” said Marsh. “Their passion, perseverance, and countless volunteer hours helped turn an idea into reality.”
The Local Advisory Board meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at Montezuma Elementary. Meetings are open to the public.
Supporting Teachers Through Community Giving
As students begin the school year, Indiana Agriculture & Technology School is also inviting the community to continue investing in local classrooms through its Classroom Care Package Initiative.
The campaign’s goal is to ensure every classroom is fully stocked with essential supplies so teachers never have to purchase classroom materials with their own money.
Nationally, teachers spend an average of nearly $900 annually out of pocket on classroom supplies. Through donations of school supplies and financial contributions, IATS hopes to eliminate that burden for Montezuma teachers.
